RoHS and WEEE
The
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Directive (WEEE) is a highly complex Directive,
which is further compounded by EU member
states implementing various timescales,
differing recovery rates and specific legal
From a legislative perspective, it is already
illegal to sell certain electrical and electronic
equipment (EEE) into EU member states where
producer registration is already mandatory.
RoHS, lead-free legislation, or to use its
accurate but somewhat lengthy title "Directive
2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use
of certain hazardous substances in electrical
and electronic equipment", will be
enforced throughout the European Community
from 1st July 2006.
It is to restrict the use of six substances
within electrical and electronic equipment
(EEE), thereby contributing to the protection
of human health and the environment. The
six substances identified by RoHS are Lead,
Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium, PBBS,
and PBDEs.
Although RoHS is a European Union (EU) Directive,
manufacturers of EEE outside Europe must
also abide by this legislation if the equipment
they produce is ultimately imported into
a EU member state.
Silicon Tech, a provider of PCB Design,
fabrication and assembly services, has undertaken
steps necessary for RoHS compliance. We
provide PCB support services to meet the
requirement for compliance with RoHS:
- Review
the Bills of Material that accompany PCB components to verity RoHS compliance.
- Provide
knowledgeable, cost-effective replacement
recommendations for components that do
